[DEFINITION]
An actuator that uses polymer.
[DESCRIPTION]
A polymer gel like polyvinyl alcohol contracts or swells at
external stimuli such as hydrogen ion concentration, temperature, and electromagnetic energy. The
property is used not only as an actuator , but also as a sensor. Polymer actuators can be applied
to the robot hand, sensors, switches, and drug delivery system. Features of polymer actuators are:
1) System simplification by its multifunctionality, 2) Compactness, 3) Good moldability,4) Good
biocompatibility.
